- Klipfolio – Presentation of webanalytical data on a map
These days, it might be beneficial to use more than just the Tracking Tool of your Companys choice, but a second one in order to visualise the tracking – and probably further online and offline data.
Especially Google Analytics, but also any other tool for web analysis, will provide the insight, that they are not the ideal Tool for the visualisation of web analysed performance figures.
Therefore, you frequently might reach the limits of insightful display formats, respectively certain, already sorted or after certain rules segmented data, won’t be displayed.
In this Blog Entry, we would like to introduce you to the Visualisation Tool Klipfolio, which was founded in Canada in 2001.
In order to use Klipfolio, you have to visit the official Klipfolio Webpage and create a chargeable Account and logon online.
After your logon, it is possible to use so called Klips for the visualisation. You may either create some or use templates (figure 1).

If you consolidate one or more Klips into an overview at a later date, it will be displayed as a dashboard. Depending on the functionality of the Klips and the settings made by the creator, those dashboards can be used interactively by diverse users.
Furthermore, the data source where the data – which are supposed to be visualised – are stored have to be identified and combined with the particular Klips or dashboards.
We will now create a Klip and a dashboard step by step.
Map Example: In order to keep it more apparent for the reader, we are going to create a dashboard together, using the visualisation tool Klipfolio, and choose a freshly created data source – an excel sheet – which has not been uploaded to Klipfolio yet.
Case / Challenge: Display of the Downloads for a Country on a Map
Sometimes, it might be wise to segment performance figures such as:
- Traffic numbers,
- Downloads, (this case)
into a region or a country. In order to visualise the performance figures properly for diverse contacts, a Map can be created.
In order to create or use a Map with Klipfolio, we need to compile an empty dashboard.
Step 1: Prepare an empty dashboard
Press the plus icon on the right upper corner in the dashboard title bar to create a dashboard (see figure 2).

Hereafter, the dashboard bar will scale up and it should be possible to select previously created, but also empty dashboards (without any Klips).

We press on the ‘‘add a blank dashboard‘‘ button, because so far in this instance, we want to use an empty dashboard.
In the next step it is indicated, that at least one Klip has to be selected or setup. This can be done by pressing the button ‘’add a Klip’’ (see figure 4).
Step 2: Adding a Klip to the Dashboard
Below the dashboard bar, we will press on the button ‘’Add a Klip’’.

In the following window, we will click on ‘‘Build a Custom Klip’’. Thus, we are not choosing a previously created Klip from Klipfolio.

The new window is also going to show a row of diverse display formats. We choose the format ‘’Map’’ on the list below and press it.
Step 3: Selection and upload of a Datasource
Inside of the next window, we are going to choose a datasource; three options are given (see figure 7):
- create new datasource (our choice)
- use a previously created datasource
- do not use a datasource

For this training example, we would like to – as mentioned earlier – use a new, not yet uploaded Microsoft excel sheet as a datasource. Therefore we select ‘‘create a new data source“ and click on it once.

Since we would like to use a Microsoft Excel file as input, we select ‘’File Upload Excel’’ in the following window by a click. Now we choose the memory location – where the input file is stored – via the ‘‘Browse‘‘ Option and upload it, using the ‘’Upload Now’’ button.

The following window allows you to insert a name and a description, it is highly recommended to indicate a depiction. Hence, it is possible to retrace the content of the file at a later date (even for other users) and how they could possibly be used.

Finally, the upload can be completed by pressing ‘‘Save’’.
Step 4: Feed Klip with data and format
Now we are in the Klipfolio Editor. On the left, the selected objects and the sub categories are displayed in the already known folder structure.

In the midst is an ‘‘empty map‘‘. The centre can be extended with the objects shown on the right – the so called ‘’Components’’, via drag&drop.

In order to visualise the data, we need to press on ‘’ID’’ in the editor. The Excel Sheet is going to pop up in the window below immediately.

Unfortunately, the countries shown in the example sheet – as displayed in figure 13 – are in English. Klipfolio needs the native country codes of the selected countries to work properly though.

The country codes can be downloaded via the following link:

Now, the country codes can be replaced and furthermore subjoined into the column ‘’Region- ID’’ of the previously uploaded Excel Sheet. It is also possible to upload the new Excel Sheet with the Klipfolio Country Codes as an advanced datasource.
To keep it simple, we decide to extend our Excel Sheet with the ‘’Region- ID’’ column and upload it once again.
In order to do so, we click on ‘‘Save and Exit‘‘ on the right upper corner in the Editor and select ‘‘Library’’ from the upper bar. We will search for our Excel Sheet – which has been extended by the ‘’Region- ID’’ column before – in the category ‘’Data Sources’’ and upload it once more.
Now we go back to the Dashboard we created earlier – via the bar ‘‘My Dashboards’’ and edit the target.
To finally illustrate the changes on the map, we need to click on ‘‘Regions’’ and into the field ‘’ID’’ at the right side below the components in the Klip Editor and insert the following formula:
Rational statement of grounds of the formula, which allows the classification of the attribute IDs value.
Using this formula, it is possible to assign the neccessary country codes in column D to the appurtenant country positions on the map. Since the Microsoft Excel Sheet contains a country more than once per column D (as C), (see figure XXX), we group the countries via the function ‘’Group( )“.
Using the function ‘‘Group‘‘ we receive the following content from a column:
DE, DE, DE, NL, NL, LT, LT
the issue: DE, NL, LT
Thereby the appelation appears just once.
Using the function ‘‘Slice( )“, the data are transferred seperately from the column D – without the first line respectively the column title – to the ‘’group’’ () function.

A Slice example would be:
Column A contains values in the following order: Company, XXX, YYY, ZZZ, AAA, BBB. Using Slice(@A:A) becomes: XXX, YYY, ZZZ, AAA, BBB.
Now we click on the attribute ‘’Color2’’ and insert the following formula:
Rational statement of grounds of the formula, which assigns the values to the attribute ‘’color’’.
Now we use the function ‘‘Groupby( )“, in order to receive the total download quantitiy of the B column (depending on the country code of the D column). Hence, this function sums up the download numbers of the respective country codes such as ‘‘DE‘‘.
Now it is simple to distinguish which regions in this world had a high number of downloads.

High count of downloads are shown by darker colours. Which means, darker colours mark higher numbers of downloads. If we are interested in just a part of the map, we are able to select the option ‘’map’’ in the Klip Editor and choose a particular region, for instance ‘‘Europe‘‘, by selecting ‘‘properties‘‘ from the dropdown menue (see figure 17).

As a result, we have been able to successfully accomplish the task of visualising downloads per country on a geographical map.
There are further possible functions and formatting options for the Klip ‘‘Map‘‘ available. Those will be explained step by step in later entries.
In our next article, we will extend our dashboard by another Klip and therefore provide further information to anyone using the dashboard.
